Liberty Hyde Bailey established the Department of Drawing in 1908 with William. C. Baker as its first professor. In 1917 the department was dissolved and its work divided between Landscape Art and Rural Engineering. In 1922 Landscape Art became part of the new Department of Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture. Liberty Hyde Bailey was instrumental in separating Horticulture from Botany and establishing it as a distinct scientific pursuit. Born on a farm in Michigan in 1858, Liberty Hyde Bailey graduated from the Michigan Agricultural College with a degree in botany. After working with the renowned botanist Asa Gray at Harvard, he returned to Michigan to teach horticulture and landscape gardening.
